Madame Claude Café

Madame Claude LogoThis is our favorite French restaurant. It’s located a bit off the beaten track in Jersey City. It gets crowded most weekends (reservations accepted) which makes Madame Claude’s a really lively spot with exceptional food at fair prices. Recently four of us had dinner for about $160 including the tip. Everything we had was first rate.

Among our group we started with Mesclun Salad, Sautéed Calamari in white wine and Assorted Pates.

For entrees two in our group had the Steak Frites. The others had Pork Chops with apples and calvados sauce, roasted red bliss potatoes and spinach and Mussels in a white wine, saffron, mustard sauce, ginger lemongrass with french fries. For desserts two of us shared Lemon and Sugar Crepes. The others went with La Belle Hélène (Baked Pear and Chocolate Sauce) and Homemade Crème Brulee. Service here is friendly and attentive but they don’t rush you even when busy. There a few sidewalk tables for outdoor dining when the weather is OK.

The Madame Claude Cafe was started by Alice Troietto and husband Mattias Gustafsson, both from France. Alice stops at every table to say hello and make certain everyone is having an especially good time. On one of these upcoming weekends we want to try this spot for lunch. This is a gem. Don’t miss it.

Special Bonus: Tell them you learned of Madame Claude’s from the Garden State Woman web site and you will be entitled to a complimentary dessert!
