When you are looking for a place for a special occasion dinner, this is it! We recently took our son out for dinner who was heading up from Philadelphia and onto Hoboken after dinner where he lives. We picked the Pluckemin Inn, our first time there, because it was easy for all of us to get to and because we had heard it was good. It was better than good.
Our intention was to have dinner in the bar area. But by time we arrived without a reservation at 6 on a Friday night the bar was packed with about an hour wait for a table. Rather than wait or leave we agreed with the hostess to have dinner in the main dining room which offers some but not all of the same bar food including Margarita pizzette with mozzarella and basil pesto ($12), English fish & chips ($15), Jumbo crab cake with broccoli tempura ($16) and a grilled sirloin burger with house made pic els ($16).
When we walked into the main dining room we were the only ones there. By time we left around 8 o’clock virtually every table was taken. Service was first rate as was the choice of freshly made various breads which they kept bringing to our table. The Inn offered the night we were there a three course Prix Fixe Menu for $60 per person which included day boat sea scallops for the 1st course, Alaskan halibut for the 2nd course and roasted squab with figs, pears & red kury squash for the 3rd course. Dessert choices included winesap apple & cheddar cheeses pie or maple syrup sabayon, gelato & tuile.
We selected off the a la carte menu and split a Pluckemin salad ($15) and organic risotto, banana squash, crispy pepato and creamy mozzarella ($14). For the main courses we picked: “eye of rib” with corn, chorizo, local radish and spinach ($39); the jumbo crab cake from the bar menu and a half serving of butter poached lobster, zucchini, fennel, pepper confit, mussels & cacciucco sauce ($24) – a full size serving is $39.
We split two desserts: cinnamon & Panko-crusted apple strudel with warm caramel and cinnamon honey ice cream ($11) and milk chocolate & peanut caramel tart ($12). The entrée selections portions were modest but fantastic in their preparation and flavors. The appetizers were equally good and the desserts were among the very best we have ever had.
We stayed away from the wine list which looked first rate and finished up with coffees and teas with the tab coming to nearly $150 without gratuity. For a special occasion evening out you won‘t do better than trying the main dining room at the Pluckemin Inn. The bar area in obviously a happening place on the weekends (and probably mid week as well). Get there early enough to get a table or stake out a spot at the bar.
We suggest making reservations for this exceptional restaurant which is easy to get to from Routes 202, 206, 287, 78 and 22. The name may be a bit misleading since it is a restaurant only and does not have overnight rooms.
