Carmine's Pizzeria & Restaurant

A neighborhood, family-owned particularly good Italian restaurant opened in 1968 and recommended by Doris Altana, one of Garden State Woman Judy's Circle members. We tried Carmine’s on a recent Friday night and it was every bit as good as Doris described.

Carmine’s is half a take-on on one side and a very casual restaurant on the other half. It is obviously a “locals” place. There was a steady stream of people in the take out section. Every table in the restaurant was taken by 7. We assume no reservations in this BYOB and no credit card “find.” Our bill, excluding gratuity came to just about $30 with one of us having a chicken pastina soup (delicious) and the other the equally good house salad to start. I had linguini with veal parmigiana which was a stand out selection. Judy had one of their pasta daily specialities which included Rigatoni with peas, zucchini and asparagus in a pink sauce. The sauces in both cases were superb. We both took doggie bags home for lunch the next day. The home cooking menu here is extensive from Antipasti choices to salads, to at least 30 pasta selections to veal, seafood and chicken to a wide range of hot and cold sandwiches and many pizza choices in three different sizes. The Napolitano old world style pizza with garlic and basil sauce and fresh mozzarella on a thin crust showed up at the next table and disappeared quickly and before we could ask for a taste. Maybe the next time. If you are heading west on Route 80 this is worth a stop. They are open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. This also looks like a great place to get some homemade sauces to go.
