Scribner's Restaurant

scribnersScribner’s Restaurant in Woodmont, Connecticut is locally owned and locally supported by those in the New Haven – Milford area. You should try it the next time you are traveling Route 95.

I learned about Scribner's Restaurant from someone who joined our threesome for a round of golf at the Yale University golf course – generally recognized as the #1 university golf course in the country! I asked my new friend for a recommended restaurant in New Haven. He immediately started raving about Scribner's as a truly exceptional seafood restaurant while saying we would never be able to find it.

Sounding like Scribner's might be a special find – the kind of place we love – we called our son after leaving the golf course and had him Google Scribner's to get us directions. It was certainly worth getting off Route 95 on our way back home and winding our way for 10-15 minutes through the streets of Milford, a typical old fashion New England community.

Scribner's is exactly our type of place.... friendly, cozy & unpretentious, exceptional service with really terrific food. We avoid chains restaurants whenever we can. When we discover a "Scribner's" it makes our day. Apparently Scribner's has evolved over the years from a small local convenience/fish store and expanded by absorbing the adjoining spaces as the restaurant business grew.

Back 40-50 years ago when the Connecticut towns were getaway places for New York City people and we were not yet inundated with chain restaurants off every exit of the highway Scribner's was THE place to eat in the area. While no longer mobbed (we were there on a Friday night in August) it definitely is a very special place that you should try the next time you are heading either way on Route 95.

Dinner for the two of us ran $100 including drinks and the tip. We split an order of Little Neck clams (they were great) as an appetizer which was followed by their house salad. Judy had the baked stuffed Jumbo Shrimp entrée which she said was awesome. I had the Haddock encrusted with banana chips pan fried and topped with rhubarb and strawberries chutney– what a fantastic combination. Both entrees came with rice and steamed vegetables. Everything was cooked exactly the right way. And the portions were generous.

The desserts blew us away. I had their strawberry shortcake with a homemade biscuit and whip cream. It was the largest serving and by far the best strawberry shortcake I have ever had. Judy being a peach fan went for the " Peach Freeze" - home made peach ice cream served with peach liquor on a graham cracker. It was served looking like a slice of peach ice cream pie.

We each had a glass of Riesling wine plus I probably had four glasses of ice tea to make up for being dehydrated from the round of golf. In keeping with doing everything the right way I was charged only for one glass of the ice tea!
