Fresco de Noche

frescodenocheA Taste of Mexico in Chester. The quaint town of Chester is now also the setting for a "fresh" new Mexican restaurant called Fresco de Noche. I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity and true freshness of their cuisine. The vibrant blue walls and Mexican art immediately set the mood as well as the cheery disposition of partner and "spokesmodel", Carlos Cervantes. I knew that we were off to a good start when we were offered homemade lemonade or hibiscus tea.
Did you say homemade? Yes, everything is made from scratch including the complimentary chips and three salsas that start every meal. Their menu has the standard Mexican fare but it is also sprinkled with a host of specials. I chose a weekly special called Chiles en Nogada, an artisanal dish that dates back 200 years, for $19.95. I thoroughly enjoyed the spicy green chile pepper stuffed with savory meat with a hint of sweetness, covered in a creamy walnut sauce and speckled with the acidity of pomegranate seeds. It was a complete feast for all senses of the palate. My friend, a vegetarian, ordered the San Luis for $6.95, a tortilla wrap filled with grilled vegetables, lettuce, tomato, Monterrey Jack and a chipotle sour cream spread. She continuously muttered the word fresh with every bite. Although I had ordered the home-made lemonade, she insisted that I had to try the coffee. And she was right. The coffee is a delicious Mexican blend with a hint of cinnamon making sugar almost optional for those of us who like sugar in our coffee. It perfectly accompanied dessert, Pastel 3 Leches, a homemade cake soaked in three milks (condensed, whole and evaporated) and brandy. Need I say more?
