Last Wednesday friends introduced us to a Wine Spectator Award winning wine bar on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, The Tangled Vine. On first glance, you are captivated by a quaint bar with outdoor tables perfectly cornered on Amsterdam and 81st Street. The staff is friendly and readily makes you feel at home. The menu is limited but perfectly balanced. After all, who could want more than an unforgettable Pork Belly Montadito (a.k.a. slider)? The succulent pork belly, folded into a piece of flat bread, was possibly the best that I have ever had. In addition to the pork belly, the menu included lamb and roasted mushroom montaditos. There were also delicious veal and ricotta meatballs, pizette, pastas, cheese, charcuterie and various vegetarian selections. The pizetta we ordered was football shaped and carefully decorated with thin slices of chorizo, mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and chile flakes. We couldn't resist ordering seconds.
Enough with the food. Let's get to the wine. The wine list is Old World concentrating on Organic, Sustainable & Biodynamic wines from France, Italy, Spain and Germany. They have over 40 wines offered by the glass and 200 by the bottle. The most fun nights to visit are Mondays and Wednesdays. On Montadito Mondays all bottles and Montaditos are 30% off. On WINEsday Wednesdays all bottles are offered by the glass with a 2 glass commitment. Let's not forget, however, live jazz on Tuesdays and Happy Hours on Friday and Saturday. It's the perfect hideaway from our frenzied everyday lives.
