A 25-foot statue of the famed abolitionist Harriet Tubman has been unveiled in the newly renamed Harriet Tubman Square in Newark, NJ. Her statue replaces one of Christopher Columbus which was removed in 2020.

Harriet Tubman was born in slavery in Maryland and escaped to Pennsylvania. During the years 1850-1860, she made more than a dozen trips to help enslaved people reach freedom through the Underground Railroad, a series of routes and safe houses.
