Sasha Marie Speer, Award-Winning Director, Producer, and Artist Released Her Short Film, Unborn
Dr. Sasha Marie Speer, Award-Winning Director, Producer, and Artist released her Diversity in Cannes Film Festival Winning short film, Unborn this past Mother's Day on May 12, 2023. Speer has always had a passion for fine art and photography and aims to infuse her love of the human connection and culture into her art.
Speer's own experience with her inability to get pregnant and the grief that came with it inspired her to create Unborn and share her story with other women. Finding the strength to share her story has helped her reach peace within herself. Speer says, "So many women throughout the festival circuit came forth wanting to share their story for the first time. This is a big reason I feel more people should have the opportunity to see the film. They deserve a space to feel seen."
Her acclaimed film Unborn honors those who have longed for motherhood yet have never been able to have a child due to miscarriage, abortion, infertility, or other reasons. Infertility is typically considered a taboo topic by many, but Speer hopes to bring the topic to the forefront of conversation and help people heal from sadness and grief by interweaving human emotion into visual forms within her film.
Unborn has received awards from Diversity in Cannes, Paris International Short Festival, Atlanta Movie Awards, LA Sun Film Festival, Experimental Forum, Experimental Dance & Music Film Festival, Texas Arthouse Film Festival, Palm Springs Movie Awards, New York World Film Festival, Festival Audiovisual Internacional Origen, Houston Underwater Film Festival, Toronto Indie Shorts, and Paris Women Festival. The film was also a finalist at the International Cosmopolitan Film Festival of Tokyo and the Berlin International Art Film Festival.
