Education Foundation's May 3rd Business Summit

Education Foundation's May 3rd Business Summit

Our Education Foundation's May 3rd Business Summit held at Rutgers Business School in Newark for New Jersey high school girls was a smash hit. Over 120 young women attended the all day program from 38 high schools. Several of their counselors came as well as some parents. Rothstein Kass and Townsend Tomaio and Newmark sponsored the program. Twenty two highly qualified, leading business women participated as key note speakers, panelists and moderators.

May 3rd Program

The four panel discussions included:

  • "C" level executives and professional firm partners – the view from the top
  • Women business owners – entrepreneurs sharing their journey and wisdom
  • Women early in their careers – perspectives from women only a few years older than attendees.
  • Rutgers undergraduate women business school students – just a few years ago they faced the same college and career choices as the high school attendees

Joetta Clark Diggs, a four time Olympian, a long standing friend of Garden State Woman's Founder Judy Killion, mesmerized the young audience with her stories of being a world class, medal winning athlete and now a successful woman business owner.

Arlyce Anderson drove the point home that young women have to find their way to having a "place at the table." She emphasized their futures can be boundless.

Rutgers' Aaron Gibbs talked the audience through the qualifications Rutgers seeks in incoming freshman and emphasized the power of Rutgers in helping to create major career opportunities for business school graduates.

The program was interactive with a lot of Q&A between high school women students and the discussion leaders. Both groups spent time together during breaks and the lunch Rutgers provided.

Attendees were inspired to view the day as a great networking opportunity to both meet other motivated young women as well as the presenters and Rutgers Business School leaders.

Besides learning from women at various points in their college and business careers participants also learned about career opportunities in law, accounting, retailing, pharmaceuticals, e-commerce, financial services, pet supplies, manufacturing and more.

Watch for an upcoming, even more important, learning experience for high school girls
The May 3rd program at Rutgers hit a nerve by focusing on encouraging young women to consider pursuing a business education and career. As the follow up, the Garden State Woman Education Foundation is organizing a 1 week Summer Business Academy for this same target audience.

The Academy will be held August 11th through the 15th from 9 to 4 each day.

We realize that many will be on vacation but for those staying home in mid August, this will be a really important 1 week experience for motivated, college bound high school girls considering studying business. It will be fun, fast-paced and interactive. It won't be "fluff."

The curriculum will include many outside guest discussion leaders, all sharing their experiences starting and/or growing successful businesses in a wide range of sectors.   Discussions will also aim at getting participants geared up effectively for their college search.

Participants will work in teams developing business plans and working on real life case histories. They will get to sharpen their public speaking and presentation skills. All will "graduate" with their own business cards, certificates of completion and copies of materials covered.
