Martin Van Buren (1837-1841)

Martin Van Buren, the 8th president of the United States was appointed Secretary of State by Andrew Jackson in 1827. Around this time, the economy faced abrupt economic decline due to its usual "boom and bust" cycle. Jackson's financial measures contributed to the crash. Van Buren used his time as Presidency to attempt to remedy the financial crisis. He fought for the establishment of an independent treasury system to handle Government transactions and refused the creation of a new Bank of the United States.

William Henry Harrison (1841)

The 9th president of the United States, William Henry Harrison, was the first person to die in office. His presidency lasted less than a month as he caught a cold that developed into pneumonia. Prior to being elected president, Harrison was Secretary of the Northwest Territory, helping obtain legislation dividing the Territory into the Northwest and Indiana Territories. In 1801 he became Governor of the Indiana Territory, serving 12 years.

John Tyler (1841-1845)

John Tyler, William Henry Harrison's vice president, was the first vice president to be elevated to the office of President by the death of his predecessor. Tyler was dubbed "His Accidency" by those who did not support him. He served in the House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821. The first impeachment resolution against a President was introduced in the House of Representatives when Tyler vetoed a tariff bill, but it failed.
