Susan Reach Winters

Susan Reach Winters, Esq. is one of New Jersey’s top family law attorneys and a shareholder and the Chairperson of the Family and Matrimonial Law Department of the Short Hills law firm, Budd Larner P.C.   A cum laude graduate of Rutgers University, she is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law (J.D.  cum laude 1982).

After graduating from law school, Susan joined the Budd Larner firm because she felt that it was a flexible firm with a value system that aligned with hers and recognized the need for flexible working arrangements for women attorneys.  She became head of the family law practice which includes 12 other attorneys and which has provided her the opportunity to “help people who were going through transition in their lives.”

To quote Susan “I even wrote on my law school application that I wanted to empower women.”

Susan has broad experience in all areas of the practice of family law, including divorce, prenuptial agreement, children’s rights, custody and visitation. She has counseled hundreds of women over two decades. She advises women to empower themselves in both their personal and professional lives.

“I do not view divorce as a failure; you do the best you can and then I try to provide you with a new beginning.  Women should rely on three professionals when they are going through a divorce: a good lawyer, a financial advisor and a therapist.”

Susan and her team handle all types of family and matrimonial matters ranging from uncontested marital dissolutions to sophisticated and complex litigation involving, for example, the valuation and distribution of professional practices and business interests and a wide variety of other assets. With diverse supporting specialty departments in such areas as tax, bankruptcy, corporate, real estate and commercial litigation, the Budd Larner team is uniquely equipped to handle all aspects of family and matrimonial related matters.

Susan and the other Budd Larner family and matrimonial law attorneys have lectured extensively and are the authors of a recently published three volume treatise on New Jersey family law practice, as well as a nationally published domestic relations practice book.

From the outset Susan has been a strong supporter of Garden State Woman’s efforts to educate and empower New Jersey women. As a result she has agreed to editorially contribute regularly to the Garden State Woman web site on key family law topics. Watch for her thoughts and guidance in the weeks ahead.

Susan understands the challenges of maintaining balance in her life.  In addition to her professional life, Susan is a wife, mother of two teenagers, and a fitness enthusiast.  Susan can be reached at This email address is being protected from spambots.
