Woodrow Wilson New Jersey Teaching Fellowship at William Patterson University

What is it?

A few months ago, William Paterson University and four other New Jersey institutions of higher education were awarded a grant from the Woodrow Wilson Foundation to offer a 15 month master's degree in education to candidates seeking to teach the STEM disciplines in schools in Passaic and Paterson This is a unique opportunity for individuals in their STEM careers who might be interested in becoming teachers at high schools in New Jersey. The Teaching Fellowship carries with it a stipend of $30,000 and an offer of subsidized tuition making this an unusual opportunity for the right individuals.

Who is it for?

The Woodrow Wilson New Jersey Teaching Fellowship (WWNJTF) seeks to attract talented, committed individuals with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) backgrounds-including current undergraduates, recent college graduates, mid-career professionals, and retirees-into teaching in high-need middle and secondary schools.

What does it include?

The William Paterson University College of Education, in partnership with the University's College of Science and Health, has a long history of preparing excellent science and math teachers, particularly for high-need districts. All teacher education programs at William Paterson University are nationally accredited.

The Colleges and their partners in the Paterson and Passaic school districts are pleased to offer Woodrow Wilson Teaching Fellows a $30,000 stipend to support a year-long residency and attainment of a master's degree and teaching certification with a $10,000 scholarship to offset tuition and fees. In exchange for this support, Fellows will commit to teaching in a high-need urban or rural school in New Jersey for three years, with ongoing mentoring support during this period. The 15-month program, which leads to a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, will include:

• A collaboratively designed and co-taught program with University colleagues in education, math, and science, and with school partners
• Modular coursework, which emphasizes a flipped classroom
• A cohort model (middle and secondary mathematics; middle and secondary science)Integration of positive heavier supports
• Technology infused/integrated instruction
• A yearlong residency (with weekly seminars) in diverse, high-need districts and collaborative support in clinical experiences from the College of Science and Health, the College of Education, and school partners
• Mentoring before and after program completion
• High-quality double mentoring during the program (school and University)
• High-quality mentoring throughout the induction period
• Additional focus on support for special population: English language learners, bilingual, special education (including gifted and talented).

Schools/Districts Working with William Paterson University

William Paterson University has long partnered with middle and high schools in two of its professional development school districts: the Paterson Public Schools (enrollment 29,824) and the Passaic City Public Schools (enrollment 14,546). Both districts, located in high-need urban areas, have a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced price lunches, as well as a high percentage of households in which a language other than English is spoken. These partnerships embody the power of university/school collaborations and provide state-of-the-art thinking about teacher preparation.
